Superway design and construct contract awarded
Featured Article

The first major milestone has been reached in
delivering South Australia’s most complex engineering project, the $812
million South Road Superway.
Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Anthony Albanese and
South Australian Transport Minister, Patrick Conlon said the design and
construction contract had been awarded to Urban Superway Joint Venture,
comprising John Holland Pty Ltd, McMahon Contractors Pty Ltd and Leed
Engineering and Construction Pty Ltd.
The delivery of one of Australia’s longest elevated roads will be the
largest single transport infrastructure investment ever made in South
Australia – with work to swing into action in February.
It will also be the most complex road project ever undertaken in this
State, a project the likes of which has not been seen since construction
of the Heysen Tunnels.

Search for coastal geothermal energy resources begins
Featured Article

Scientific testing at a Fraser Coast property may help unlock a significant new renewable energy resource for the region and Queensland, Mines and Energy Minister Stephen Robertson said today.
Mr Robertson said the property near Gundiah, 65 km south-west of Maryborough, will be the first location tested in Queensland’s search for new geothermal “hot rock” resources nearer to coastal areas.
“Contractors begin drilling a single test hole at the property today to collect temperature and thermal conductivity data from geological formations to a depth of 320 metres.
“Once drilling is completed, the hole will be left undisturbed for 6-8 weeks to allow temperatures to stabilise.
“Then a probe will be progressively lowered down the hole to take temperature readings at one metre intervals.

Decision on Tillegra Dam
Featured Article

Image Reference:
www.hunterwater.com.au
After a merit-based assessment process, the NSW Government has
refused the planning application for the proposed Tillegra Dam near
Dungog. No further plans for a dam in the Hunter will be considered.
The decision not to approve the application was made by Planning
Minister, Tony Kelly, on advice from the Department of Planning. That
advice followed a 14-month assessment process and unprecedented
technical and environmental scrutiny.
The refusal, as recommended by the Department of Planning after its
merit assessment process, was based on a number of key planning grounds,
including:
•An unacceptable level of uncertainty about potential impacts on the
environment, particularly the Hunter Estuary and its
internationally-recognised wetlands;
•Potential impacts on licensed water users in the area, including on
farmers and power stations; and
•Insufficient justification for the dam. The Hunter still needs a bulk
water supply, however Tillegra Dam is not considered the most
appropriate way of delivering this.
