Premier Anna Bligh today revealed the final shortlist of contenders to build the Gold Coast's light rail system.

Ms Bligh said the project had attracted three serious players and their interest was a major vote of confidence in the Gold Coast Rapid Transit project.

"Some of the biggest companies from Australia and around the world have been vying to build this $949 million project - the first of its kind in any regional Australian city," she said.

"The calibre of companies bidding should signal to everyone on the Gold Coast that the project is entering the next exciting stage of development.

"The Gold Coast Rapid Transit project will generate thousands of jobs, provide transit oriented development in key activity areas, connect the city and support huge population growth on the Coast."

Alliance named for $650M South Morang Project

Featured Article

Alliance members were recently named for the $650 million project to extend the Epping rail line in Victoria, to South Morang. The alliance comprises John Holland, AECOM, the Department of Transport, VicRoads and Metro Trains Melbourne. KBR is a sub-alliance member with Arup and Cox sub-consultants responsible for design of the stations.

The major infrastructure project will increase public transport capacity in Melbourne's north – a strong growth area in Victoria – as well as improving reliability and efficiency and generating thousands of new jobs. The rail project is driven by the need to accommodate Victoria’s growing population and an increased reliance on public transport and to improve the overall delivery of rail services to the state.

The new Gateway Bridge opened to traffic on Monday 24 May, six months ahead of schedule.

The new bridge was constructed by Abigroup in a joint venture and during its three year construction period, 11,600 tonnes of steel was used, as well as 45,000 cubic metres of concrete and 9100 tonnes of asphalt.
