Thiess will continue coal mining operations at the
South Walker Creek Mine in Queensland, following athree year
$229m contract extension by the mine’s owner BHP Mitsui Coal Pty Ltd
(BMC) it wasannounced today.
South Walker Creek Mine is located
approximately 40km west of Nebo, in the state’s coal rich BowenBasin.
The mine produces both PCI and thermal product coal for export.
Thiess constructed and began
operating the South Walker Creek Mine in 1996. The contract for theremoval
of overburden, coal processing, and train loading was extended in 2000
with subsequentextensions in June 2003 and in July 2007. The
new contract focuses on overburden and coal mining.
Thiess Managing Director David
Saxelby today welcomed the ongoing commercial relationship with
BMC.
“The award of the new contract is testament to the
relationship developed with BHP Mitsui Coal overthe last 14
years and to the efforts of our respective teams,” Mr Saxelby said.
Thiess employs nearly 300 technical,
operational, maintenance and management team members atSouth
Walker Creek Mine. Thiess Mining Chief Executive Bruce Munro said he
looks forward tocontinuing to work with BHP Mitsui Coal and
to further improvements in safety performance as a key
priority.
“On a number of occasions during the
current term the site has achieved more than 100 daysrecordable
injury free while delivering the required production outputs,” Mr Munro
said.
