Design of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital by architects BVN Architecture is well underway. Construction will be conducted in two stages and is expected to commence in mid 2010. Stage one will involve an extension to the existing Maternity building and is expected to be completed in late 2011. Stage two will involve a major refurbishment of the existing building and is expected to be completed in late 2012.
The new three-storey Hospital will see the co-location of services including Paediatrics at the Canberra Hospital (PatCH), maternity services, the neonatal intensive care unit, gynaecology and fetal medicine and specialised outpatient services.
With 146 beds and an increased number of ambulatory care (outpatient) consult rooms, the Hospital will incorporate the latest information and communication technologies that enhance patient care and safety, as well as environmental initiatives that reduce energy costs and improve the workplace.
The new Hospital will also provide clinical office space, education and training facilities, and family accommodation as well as a play ground, café and landscaped spaces.
