Minister
for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs James Merlino, Minister for
Major Projects Tim Pallas and Australian tennis star Casey Dellacqua all
dug deep today to turn the first sod at Melbourne Park, helping Bovis
Lend Lease kick off the major redevelopment of the precinct.
The high profile trio was joined by Bovis Lend Lease representatives to
commence the 2010 works package component of the project. The $20
million 2010 works package is the initial component of Stage 1 of the
Melbourne Park Redevelopment, which is valued at $363 million in total.
Bovis Lend Lease was appointed Managing Contractor
for the $20 million 2010 works package in March 2010. The company has a
strong history at Melbourne Park, having delivered the original National
Tennis & Entertainment Centre in the late 1980s, which created the
platform for the precinct itself and included Rod Laver Arena, practice
courts, administrative offices and associated infrastructure.
Bovis Lend Lease Victoria General Manager Geoff
Moore was pleased to see work commence on the important project.
“Melbourne Park is an important part of the Australian sporting
landscape and Bovis Lend Lease is extremely proud to be commencing this
significant redevelopment which will ensure it remains one of the
world’s best sporting venues for decades to come,” Mr Moore said.
The 2010 works package involves: the installation of a 4.5 mega-litre
stormwater retention tank under the oval next to Rod Laver Arena; an
extension and landscaping works to the Rod Laver Arena Western Concourse
along Batman Avenue to house water treatment and water storage
facilities, as well as the Australian Open marquees; a landscape upgrade
to the Oval; new entry stairs to Rod Laver Arena; and improvements to
the taxi rank on Olympic Boulevard.
The massive stormwater tank is a key feature of the 2010 works package.
As an industry leader in sustainability, Bovis Lend Lease will deliver
the tank to form an integral part of the innovative water management
system planned, which will feature recycled stormwater being supplied
for re-use throughout the precinct.
The 2010 works package is scheduled to be completed prior to the 2011
Australian Open.
