Alliance members were recently named for the $650 million project to extend the Epping rail line in Victoria, to South Morang. The alliance comprises John Holland, AECOM, the Department of Transport, VicRoads and Metro Trains Melbourne. KBR is a sub-alliance member with Arup and Cox sub-consultants responsible for design of the stations.

The major infrastructure project will increase public transport capacity in Melbourne's north – a strong growth area in Victoria – as well as improving reliability and efficiency and generating thousands of new jobs. The rail project is driven by the need to accommodate Victoria’s growing population and an increased reliance on public transport and to improve the overall delivery of rail services to the state.

Arup is responsible for all engineering disciplines for the station design and delivery with COX Architects acting as sub-consultant. Arup will also provide project wide transport planning and engineering, acoustics and project sustainability consulting.

Works to Epping and South Morang stations form a significant component of the project scope along with additional modifications at Thomastown station to build a second platform and pedestrian overpass. Epping station is a complex transport hub with large volumes of bus, vehicle, pedestrian and rail commuter traffic. Planning and redeveloping the junction will improve amenities and provide a further catalyst for urban regeneration in the surrounding area.

Arup is thrilled to be part of the project team delivering this major infrastructure upgrade for Victoria, explains Arup Project Director Joseph Correnza. “This project allows us to continue delivering exceptional results for the community, providing better amenities and functionality for facilities that are designed to become integral to the local community” Joseph explains.

“To some extent works to these stations create opportunities to rethink public transport hubs as part of the urban fabric and to approach design in an integrated and sustainable way” Joseph continues. “We hope this process will give rise to regeneration and growth for years to come.”

Works are scheduled to commence later this year and be completed in 2013.
