Cardno launches new environmentally sustainable design (ESD) team

Cardno has strengthened its commitment to sustainable design in Asia Pacific with the launch of a new environmentally sustainable design (ESD) team specialising in buildings.
The team provides design solutions to meet clients’ project objectives for new buildings or existing buildings requiring sustainable retrofitting. Service offerings include building rating tools such as Green Star, NABERS, WELL, Living Building Challenge, in addition to building code compliance such as NCC Section J and BASIX.
The team will work closely with Cardno’s established Sustainability Infrastructure and Planning teams. The complementary design capability enables involvement in community as well as precinct-scale projects with early implementation of ESD principles from project concept stage by exploring various options to achieve our clients’ objectives.
Designing buildings through the principles of ESD results in a more balanced environmental, social and economic outcome. This is already understood and embraced by leading property developers, builders, architects, engineers and suppliers around the globe involved in buildings awarded with high performance ratings under their respective rating tools.
Davis Demillo, ESD Team Leader, has a personal belief that sustainability should not just be done for the sake of ticking the box for project approvals or achieving higher premiums from tenants, but for stakeholders to consider the impact on future generations who will be occupying these buildings and interacting with the external environment.

“They can discover how their decisions really matter in the overall scheme of things. It’s not just about saving costs from energy or water use. The presence of that building can either be contributing to the overall benefit or detriment of the surrounding environment, communities and building owners, depending on how it was designed and constructed”, said Davis.
“We need a major paradigm shift in the way we make decisions towards a more altruistic future. Part of that challenge is to think about long-term strategies and future-proof our buildings and communities through climate resilience, whilst dealing with the hindrance of other industries that seek to undermine these objectives. With the spate of unprecedented bushfires in Australia and other recent global catastrophes, the economic impacts of doing too little or nothing, are too high.”
