The McGowan Government has today committed an additional $96 million to fund the expansion of the Joondalup Health Campus.
Architectural design for the expansion has commenced, an expression of interest to pre-select builders will take place in January and construction is due to begin in mid-2020. The entire build is expected to be completed by July 2025.
An election commitment, the expansion will comprise:
-
30 new mental health inpatient beds;
-
12 additional emergency department patient bays;
-
an Urgent Care Clinic;
-
90 inpatient beds in a design to meet future demand;
-
six new critical care beds;
-
362 new parking bays for members of the public and staff; and
-
two new operating theatres, one of which is a cardiac catheter laboratory.
Work on the expanded staff car park and emergency department will commence first, with the emergency department benefiting from 12 new treatment bays and an Urgent Care Clinic (UCC). This specialist UCC will treat patients affected by drugs or alcohol in a separate clinical area, away from the main emergency department. This will ease pressure on the emergency department while providing a more appropriate treatment space.
The $96 million commitment brings the estimated total cost of the expansion project to $256.7 million, of which the Commonwealth has committed $158 million.
A Heads of Agreement has been signed between Ramsay Health Care and the McGowan Government for the project.
Comments attributed to Health Minister Roger Cook:
"Expanding the Joondalup Health Campus to meet growing demand is a priority for the McGowan Government. The expansion will create jobs and deliver a world-class public hospital to meet the growing population needs of Perth's northern corridor.
"The build will start next year and begins with the emergency department and additional staff and public parking. The addition of an Urgent Care Clinic will ease pressure on the busy emergency department at Joondalup and provide a more appropriate place to treat drug and alcohol affected patients.
"The McGowan Government is putting patients first and delivering on its election commitment to the residents of Perth's northern suburbs."
Comments attributed to Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton:
"Residents of Joondalup are eager to see this significant health infrastructure project delivered.
"I'm excited about this funding announcement and can't wait to see works begin on site next year.
"We committed to the expansion of the Joondalup Health Campus at the last election and we are delivering on our promise."
