Footscray Hospital Another Step Closer

28 October 2019

The Andrews Labor Government has shortlisted three consortia featuring construction companies vying to build the $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital.

Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos today announced the shortlisted consortia to complete what will be the single biggest ever hospital project in Victorian history.

The consortia shortlist is:

The final consortium will be announced next year, with shovels set to hit the ground later in 2020 and the project to be complete by 2025.

The Footscray Hospital will feature 504 beds and will be built next to Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus, on the corner of Geelong and Ballarat Roads and will replace the current hospital that was built in the 1950s.

The project is being delivered by the Labor Government as a Public Private Partnership. It will open in 2025, and create up to 2,000 jobs during construction and the operating phases of the hospital.

The bigger and better Footscray Hospital will cut wait times and allow almost 15,000 additional patients to be treated and almost 20,000 additional patients to be seen at the emergency department each year.

Families in Melbourne’s west deserve the very best care. The new Footscray Hospital will allow up to 17,000 local residents to get the world-class treatment and care that they need closer to home, without having to visit hospitals in the city.

It’s just one of the projects funded as part of the Labor Government’s massive $3.8 billion pipeline of hospital projects to ensure patients get the very best care, when they need it most.
