10 October 2019

Martinus Rail has today officially agreed a formal partnership with multinational rail and infrastructure contractor, Gamuda Berhad (Gamuda).

The A$3.7 billion engineering and construction company from Malaysia has signed an agreement to invest in Martinus Rail.

“Today I am pleased to announce that Gamuda has chosen to invest in Martinus Rail in what is an exciting opportunity to realise the further growth of our business,” Treaven Martinus, Managing Director of Martinus Rail said.

“Martinus and Gamuda have complementary strengths in rail infrastructure construction and proud company histories. With the hefty balance sheet and mega-project experience of Gamuda backing us, Martinus Rail is set for a bright future in the rail industry,” Mr Martinus added.

Gamuda was founded in 1976 and has grown to become the largest contractor in Malaysia. The listed company has over 5,000 people and operations across Asia and the Middle East.

The turnkey contractor is currently delivering Malaysia’s A$10 billion Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 2. The mega project has 12 Tunnel Boring Machines working through some of the world’s most challenging geotechnical conditions to deliver a 53km metro rail system with 35 stations.

A Gamuda-led Joint Venture completed the A$8.2 billion MRT Line 1 in 2017.

Gamuda’s award-winning A$4.3 billion Electrified Double Track Project spanned 329km and included design and construction of track, tunnels, 23 stations, electrification and signalling systems.

Martinus Rail General Manager – New Business and Strategy, Ryan Baden said, “This is the next step in our journey as one of Australia’s leading rail infrastructure contractors. We have grown significantly in recent years, but further growth required another level of financial strength and experience in delivering more complex projects across all contract models.”

“There are no changes or impacts on our current project commitments, and Treaven is fully committed to the Martinus Rail team and to implementing the company’s growth plan,” Mr Baden added.

“Going forward, we’re adding significant capability in civil and structural work in railway construction and can leverage ground-breaking innovation and engineering solutions to help deliver some of Australia’s largest rail projects.”

“Gamuda is leading the way with regards to innovation and technology on their current infrastructure projects. We’re excited by the prospect of bringing this knowledge and expertise to the Australian rail industry,” Mr Baden said.
