As Canberra grows toward a population of 500,000 by 2030, the ACT Government is investing in infrastructure that will ensure our city remains one of the world’s most liveable.

The Government has created a comprehensive, multi-decade infrastructure plan to build on the foundations that already make the capital a great place to live, work, start a business and raise a family.

The new infrastructure plan details over $14 billion worth of infrastructure investments right across Canberra. It includes new schools in our suburbs, the largest expansion of the Canberra Hospital in the ACT Government’s history and the renewal of existing infrastructure in more established regions.

The focus of the plan is squarely upon the priorities that matter most: health, education, transport and the community services that help make Canberra one of the world’s most liveable cities.

The plan shows how these major infrastructure investments will support economic growth and provide the services Canberrans need.

It is a plan that will, in large part, be delivered by the ACT Government. However, there are many individual projects that will be delivered in partnership with either the Federal Government, the NSW Government, institutional investors and the private sector or a combination of these.

The plan also provides a framework for how the Government will renew established infrastructure to cater for a city of 500,000 people. The Canberra Theatre for example was built for a city of 100,000 people. The Government wants to ensure that the ACT can attract the world’s best performers and artists with a bigger, fit-for-purpose theatre as part of a broader arts and cultural precinct in the heart of the city.

The plan acknowledges Canberra’s role as a regional hub given there are more than 750,000 people who live within our borders and in the greater Canberra region.

This Government’s focus will remain constant over the years covered by this Plan: delivering the essential infrastructure that makes life better for Canberrans.
