The opening of Sydney Metro Northwest marks an important moment in Australia’s history, and a new era of public transport in New South Wales.

John Holland CEO Joe Barr said the company was proud to have helped make Australia’s first driverless metro a reality.

“More than a thousand men and women from John Holland worked on this city-shaping project. Sydney Metro is a testament to their imagination, their determination and their hard work,” Mr Barr said.

“John Holland people built the tunnels, laid the track, built the stations, and prepared the railway for carrying passengers. Our gratitude goes out to them and their families.

“The start of Sydney Metro services will bring communities in Sydney closer together and transform the way we move around Australia’s largest city.”

The opening of Sydney Metro is also a significant milestone for the company, boosting John Holland’s presence in rail operations and maintenance.

“As part of Metro Trains Sydney, the operator of the trains, we are excited to ensure the highest level of service for customers catching Sydney Metro Northwest. This is the second major rail service to launch this year that John Holland will operate, after the opening of Canberra Metro in April,” Mr Barr said.

“This is a huge vote of confidence in our rail team and adds to our existing operations of the Country Regional Network in NSW and Metro Trains Melbourne in Victoria.”

John Holland is currently also building the tunnels under Sydney Harbour for Sydney Metro City and Southwest as well as upgrading Sydenham Station and junction.
