Australian Government welcomes findings from Parliamentary Inquiry into ACT Light Rail
25 March 2019
Assistant
Minister for Regional Development and Territories Sussan Ley today
welcomed the findings from the recent parliamentary inquiry into Stage 2
of
Canberra’s light
rail project.
Assistant Minister Ley said the
Australian Government supported the
recommendations made by the Joint Standing Committee on the National
Capital and External Territories Inquiry.
“The Government supports the Committee’s six recommendations, which
provide clarity around the approval and referral process as well as
safety, aesthetic, heritage and environmental considerations,” Ms Ley
said.
“Following the tabling of this report, the Australian Government
encourages the National Capital Authority and the
ACT Government to continue working together to ensure that the
proposed route for the project is consistent with the National Capital
Plan.
“Canberra is more than just a city; it is home to some of the nation’s
most significant institutions and
buildings and is filled with examples
of our
heritage and national identity.
“That is why it is so essential that the unique character of the
nation’s capital is preserved for all Australians.
“The National Capital Authority maintains responsibility for determining
applications for works and planning approvals for major projects on
National Land.”
