New transport expert Leigh Barrett joins Beca

Beca: Beca is pleased to announce the recent appointment of Leigh Barrett, our new Principal and Technical Director of Transport based in Melbourne.
Leigh joins Beca with more than 27 years’ transport design experience, working alongside state road authorities and design consultancies across NSW, Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania in Australia. He can put his name to high-profile construction projects such as EastLink (Melbourne), the South Road Superway (Adelaide) and the Airport Link, Northern Busway and Airport Roundabout Upgrade (Brisbane).
At Beca, Leigh is responsible for business development and delivery of projects: ranging from matching clients’ needs with our capabilities to overseeing proposals and all aspects of delivery. He is also keen to harness two decades worth of transport knowledge to help mentor and coach junior staff.
“I have a strong technical background in design, so I want to work with our teams, particularly the younger members to build their skills and abilities,” he says.
Leigh is looking forward to working in a broader role than he has held in the past:
“In this industry, you don’t always get the opportunity to be a ‘complete consultant’ – many engineers are involved in the delivery only. But at Beca, I can engage with our clients and delivery partners on all stages of a project which is really fulfilling.” While Leigh has spent the last 20 years in consulting, he began his career as an engineer in Tasmania’s Department of Transport and has a strong background working with contractors during construction – so, he’s no stranger to understanding what both clients and contractors need.
He will work closely with Rachel Fowler in Beca’s Transport & Infrastructure team, who says, "Leigh's a great addition to our growing team in Melbourne and to Beca in Australia with the breadth of his client contact and experience across the eastern states".
