First stage of southern prison project
11 October 2018
Tasmanian Government:
The first stage of the $79.3 million
Southern Remand Centre and
Risdon Prison Complex upgrade program has
begun with
tenders now open.
The Department of Justice is seeking the services of a suitably
qualified Design Consultant to develop and oversee the new facilities.
This will be the first key tender to be released for the program, which
includes the construction of the $70 million Southern Remand Centre and
the $9.3 million upgrades to the Risdon Prison Complex.
The Southern Remand Centre will include two maximum security rated male
accommodation units, with a minimum of 140 beds across the two units, a
medical clinic and sports hall.
The RPC work includes an upgrade and extension of the Visitors Centre, a
new kitchen, and upgrades to the gatehouse and health centre.
This is just another example of how the Hodgman Liberal Government is
planning for the future and improving the capacity of our prison
facilities.
Construction is planned to commence in late March 2019 and conclude by
mid-2019.
