Welcoming Calvary’s co-located hospital proposal

27 June 2018

Tasmanian Government: The Hodgman Liberal Government welcomes Calvary’s proposal to invest in a new $100 million private hospital, co-located adjacent to the Launceston General Hospital.

Calvary
Health Care made an unsolicited bid proposal to the Office of the Coordinator-General last year and it has since been progressed to the second phase of the process.

This process will involve the assessment panel and calvary working together to finalise the appropriate location within the health precinct to ensure it meets the needs of both parties and future plans, and also ensuring that the co-location ultimately improves the services and health outcomes for both public and private patients alike.

Calvary has previously publicly indicated that the proposal includes a range of services, including palliative care, which is important for so many individuals and their families in the north.

Calvary has served the
Launceston community well for many years, but currently operates from two different campuses, which they advise is not ideal. They believe the co-located set up would significantly improve facilities and better serve the community, whether they are private or public patients.

We have listened to the experts, including specialists and the hospital community, who have expressed support for the proposal, saying it has the potential to improve recruitment and specialist retention issues.

The
Hodgman Liberal Government has formally notified Calvary that we will progress their proposal to the second phase of the process, which will be conducted over the next few months.

Importantly, we will ensure the community’s best interests are at the centre of any future plans, including ensuring there is adequate parking availability at the
LGH.

Health is a key priority for the
Tasmanian Government, and we will continue investing in the LGH and the public hospital system.
