Big revitalisation projects now underway in the capital of the North

06 June 2018

NT Government: Creating local jobs and growing the Territory’s population are key priorities for the Territory Labor Government.

Announcing the successful tender for the new underground car park in the CBD, Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Nicole Manison said a number of big revitalisation projects about to get underway in Darwin’s CBD will create hundreds of jobs for local Territory businesses over coming months, and breathe new life into the CBD.

“Local company the Tomazos Group has been awarded the tender to build the new 450-space, three level underground car park, which will create 60 direct jobs and support an additional 165 jobs during construction.

“The aim of this project is to create more green space in the CBD, by freeing up four heat-generating ground level car parks for re-development. This means instead of unsightly car parks, we will see improved parklands, green initiatives, walkways and improved amenities.

“This project marks the start of the State Square redevelopment, which will ultimately see the relocation of the bus terminal, the demolition of the Chan building and improved and activated laneways, walkways, cycle paths and relaxing/social areas.

Ms Manison said three big construction projects have been awarded in the past week to local businesses – the innovative shade structure along Cavenagh St, Barneson Boulevard and today, the underground car park to free up more green space.

“We can expect to see a lot of work in the CBD over coming months, which is great news for the construction industry, and great news for CBD retailers and shop owners.

“All of these projects – including yesterday’s announcement of a location and expression of interest process to develop a world-class water park – are about attracting more tourists to our capital and making the CBD more liveable for locals.

“These projects are game changers for the CBD, and will unlock further economic development in retail, hospitality and tourism.

“Last week City Deal Australian Government Minister Paul Fletcher gave a very firm commitment to continuing work on funding for the tropical capital of Northern Australian.”

Construction of the underground car park is expected to commence in June and will take approximately 15 months to complete.
