NT Government: The Territory Labor Government is delivering on another important election commitment with $45 million dollars set aside in 2019/20 for a major redevelopment of John Stokes Square – including a 24-hour police station.

Member for Nightcliff Natasha Fyles said budget 2018 creates more jobs, attracts more people to the Territory and invests in generational change to create a brighter future for all Territorians.

“Nightcliff residents and businesses want and deserve safe communities and we are delivering with this exciting and innovative investment,” she said.

“John Stokes Square, opposite the Nightcliff Village, is nearing the end of its economic life and has long been a hot spot for crime and anti-social behaviour. We know John Stokes is nearing the end of its economic life.

“I have listened to concerns from John Stokes’ residents, and from families and businesses across Nightcliff, about the serious need for change and worked closely with my cabinet colleagues to create a holistic approach for lasting improvements.”

The new $45 Million project will see the redevelopment of John Stokes Square to include:

Minister Fyles said residents at John Stokes will be relocated or provided with temporary accommodation, with residents being able to nominate their preferred location.

“Extensive consultations will start soon to ensure that residents of John Stokes Square are supported to prepare for change,” she said. “The Territory Labor Government believes that Territorians have a right to public housing and to deliver safe and inclusive communities we need to improve the way we provide that service.

“This new project is expected to support hundreds of local jobs, providing a much needed boost to our construction industry,” she said.

“The Department of Housing and Community Development is continuing to work with the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services on this important project.

“A full business case for the project, including detailed costing, stakeholder engagement and operating costs is expected to be complete in the coming months.”
