Climate action: Sub-national governments getting the job done

13 March 2018

ACT Government: The ACT’s new partnership with Parkes Shire Council and Lismore City Council will enable all three cities to learn from each other to better tackle climate change, Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury said today.

Minister Rattenbury will today meet with Parkes Mayor, Ken Keith OAM, and Lismore Mayor, Isaac Smith as part of the Cities Power Partnership, a network of 70 Australian governments and councils that represent the interests of over 7 million Australians.

“Climate action cannot be done in isolation. It is increasingly clear that to achieve real progress we need to seek partners and share our good news stories and learn from others about new and better ways of doing things.

“This meeting will establish our buddy network under the auspices of the Cities Power Partnership to promote cross-government collaboration to mitigate the causes of climate change and adapt to the irreversible impacts caused by decades of unrestricted greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“Through this partnership we will both share and learn about innovative climate policy actions so we can all continue to reduce our collective carbon emissions and adapt to the effects of the higher temperatures predicted for our region.

“For example, the ACT can share information about its innovative renewable energy reverse auction process and learn more about Parkes’ new solar energy plant, which floats on sewage ponds and was funded through community investment. Lismore will have valuable insights on developing innovative ownership schemes, such as its 200kw community-owned solar scheme.

“With climate policy showing little movement at the federal level, it is up to the lower levels of government to take the lead and pool efforts to ensure Australia honours its commitment to the Paris Agreement, which seeks to limit global warming to well within 2 degrees.”
