New World-Class University Campus For Fishermans Bend

11 January 2018

Victorian Government: The Andrews Labor Government is helping to create a world-class university campus in the heart of Fishermans Bend – driving highly-skilled jobs of the future and new investment opportunities.

Treasurer Tim Pallas, Minister for Industry and Employment Ben Carroll, and Member for Albert Park Martin Foley joined University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Glyn Davis AC to announce that its School of Engineering will move to Fishermans Bend – part of the University’s almost $1 billion plan to create a world-class engineering school.

The Labor Government and the University have reached an agreement that will see the University purchase approximately seven hectares of the 32 hectare site – just 5 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD.

The new campus, which will open in the early 2020s, will be at the centre of Australia’s largest urban renewal project and will see more than 1,000 new engineering and IT students and academics collaborate with industry leaders.

The move will allow the University to undertake large scale research and innovation that can’t be accommodated at the Parkville campus – including autonomous vehicles testing, engine propulsion testing and wind tunnels.

The University’s economic modelling for their 2025 engineering strategy shows that their investment will provide an $8 billion boost to Victoria’s economy and generate over 15,000 new jobs by 2035.

It’s just what is needed as the Labor Government continues to rollout the biggest infrastructure investment in Victoria’s history.

The Labor Government is fixing the mess Matthew Guy left behind in Fishermans Bend – supporting tens of thousands of jobs, new schools, public transport and housing.

The Fishermans Bend precinct will support 80,000 residents and 80,000 jobs by 2050.
