Australia's longest single span shared path bridge takes shape
The truss segments were transported from the Hunter Region to
Penrith via the Pacific Highway, M1 Motorway, Pennant Hills Road M2, M7,
M4 Motorways and Mulgoa Road

successfully commenced the launch of steel trusses for the
NSW
Government’s new pedestrian and cyclist
bridge over the Nepean River,
which will be the longest single span bridge of its kind in Australia
upon completion.
Seymour Whyte Constructions Regional Manager – Southern, Steve Lambert,
said this significant milestone was the result of many months of
meticulous planning and execution by the project team.
“Our team is continuing to work closely with the Client
Roads & Maritime
Services, steel fabricator Civmec and launching contractor Freyssinet to
design, manufacture, transport and eventually launch all of the eight
25m x 8m sections of the main span truss.”
The specially designed truss segments were partially manufactured in the
Hunter Region and transported safely across almost 200km under complex
traffic management arrangements to the project site in Penrith, Western
Sydney. The 8.2m wide loads were the widest ever transported through
metropolitan Sydney.
Project Manager Greg Anderson explained that the bridge is being
constructed over the heritage-listed Nepean River rowing course, the
longest natural straight rowing course in Australia.
“To ensure the community’s continued enjoyment of the rowing course, we
are working to deliver a 200m clear span bridge over the Nepean River,”
he said.
“Our methodology of incrementally launching the main span truss from the
river bank with the support of two temporary piers will enable us to
construct the 200m bridge with no permanent piers in the water.”
The incremental launch of all eight sections will continue for the
coming months. Once the main span truss is installed, the temporary
piers will be removed. So far, four sections are onsite in various
stages of construction. Two sections have been launched.
Upon completion in late 2018, the new bridge will provide a safe
crossing for pedestrians and cyclists over the Nepean River and improve
connections to existing and future shared paths, including the Great
River Walk.
