John Holland announces contract award for Melbourne metro tunnel project
09 January 2018
John Holland today announced that
Cross Yarra Partnership has signed a contract with
Melbourne Metro Rail
Authority to finance, design, construct and maintain the Tunnel and
Stations Package for approximately 25 years as part of the
Metro Tunnel
Project.
The Metro Tunnel will be
Victoria’s biggest ever public transport
project and Cross Yarra Partnership will deliver twin nine-kilometre
tunnels and five new underground stations at North
Melbourne (Arden),
Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac. John Holland also have
the rights to deliver the over-site development at State Library
Station.
Cross Yarra Partnership is a consortium of John Holland,
Lendlease,
Bouygues Construction and
Capella Capital.
Chief Executive Officer, Joe Barr, said the project has already kicked
off an exciting process of urban renewal for inner-Melbourne.
“This is an amazing project and we can’t wait to deliver it for the
people of Melbourne,” he said.
“There will be revitalised open space above ground at all stations and
additional entrances to reduce crowding on CBD streets. By enabling more
workers easy access to the busy city area, the benefits will flow to
businesses, employees, and the economy at large.”
Executive General Manager VIC, Trevor Hall, said the Tunnels and
Stations Package will create more than 5,000 jobs.
“This is an exciting time for the construction industry in Melbourne.
We’re creating thousands of jobs as part of the Metro Tunnel and
recruitment is already underway - including for apprentices and
trainees. In addition, 65% of the project will be delivered by small and
medium sized businesses,” he said.
Cross Yarra Partnership was announced as the preferred tenderer for the
$6 billion Tunnel and Stations Public Private Partnership in July 2017.
