Fremantle site offers rare opportunity for affordable housing project

08 December 2017

WA Government: The McGowan Government has announced a rare opportunity for a private sector partner to help develop a 1.4 hectare residential site with capacity for up to 250 new homes in the east end of Fremantle and close to the heart of the historic port city's central business district.

Development of a new affordable community at 19-25 Burt Street has the potential to create and support hundreds of jobs during the construction phase.

The project will boost the McGowan Government's vision of delivering more affordable and social housing options for Western Australia.

The formal call for expressions of interest was made today with a specially developed package for private developers that includes a video presentation, available through the Tenders WA website.

The successful developer or consortium will contribute expertise, creativity and financial resources to create a high-density residential development that positively contributes to the surrounding neighbourhood.

The Burt Street site, zoned R160, has capacity for up to 250 dwellings to meet demand from families, key workers and seniors wanting to downsize while remaining in Fremantle.

The development will include a mix of social housing, affordable home ownership and rental opportunities, as well as properties for sale at market value.

The Department of Communities is undertaking a two-stage procurement process to identify a suitable developer or consortium, with the expressions of interest closing at 2.30pm WST on Friday, February 16, 2018. For more information, visit http://www.tenders.wa.gov.au

Comments attributed to Housing Minister Peter Tinley:

"The McGowan Government's social and affordable housing vision supports the development of liveable, sustainable and thriving communities.

"As WA's biggest built-form developer, the Department of Communities is a key player in achieving this vision and it has won numerous domestic and international awards for projects it has delivered in collaboration with the private sector.

"The proposed Burt Street partnership offers a well located site near the heart of Fremantle that is close to jobs, public transport and established amenities.

"The development partner will benefit from a lower entry cost as the State Government owns the land. In return, a proportion of the completed homes will be retained by government for social and affordable housing programs.

"This highly successful business model not only delivers social and affordable housing for Western Australians, it also helps to create and support jobs and boost economic activity.
