Cardno promotes mentoring the next generation of engineers

12 October 2017

Cardno: As a recognition of the importance of linking young engineers with seasonal professional mentors, Cardno has established the Richard Kell Scholarship, named after its first Chairman.

The annual Scholarship provides an exceptional engineer the opportunity to participate in the highly-regarded International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) Young Professionals Management Training Program, and subsequently in the annual international FIDIC Conference.

The Richard Kell Scholarship was established to acknowledge Richard Kell’s significant contributions to the engineering profession and industry both nationally and internationally, and specifically to Cardno with over 50 years’ service to the business.

This year our Richard Kell Scholarship winner, Tyson Kingston, has participated in the on-line training program with some 50 young engineers from around the globe, and then completed the program at the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) 2017 International Infrastructure Conference in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he met with the other program participants and course mentors and with Richard Kell.

Cardno’s Tyson Kingston, Senior Environmental Engineer, wrote his submission for the scholarship on ways to improve project management workflows in the company.

Tyson said, “The FIDIC Young Professionals Management Training Program is a great way to gain an insight to how a consulting engineering business operates. It also provides networking opportunities with similarly experienced engineers across the world.”

Tyson Kingston is an Environmental Engineer with seven years' experience in the contaminated land consultancy industry. Tyson has worked on a range of sites including industrial sites, former landfills, residential developments, parklands, service stations and townships.

Richard Kell is a Chartered Civil Engineer and honours graduate 1959 from Sydney University; he has spent his working life as a consulting engineer in infrastructure engineering. Formerly Chair of Cardno, Richard is now a consultant to Cardno International Development, and continues his involvement on bridge, highway, marine, water and building projects, in Australia, Asia and the Middle East. He has worked on infrastructure projects in Indonesia since 1981, including the Australian Steel Bridges project. He specialises in contract management and dispute resolution matters for his firm.

Richard was World President of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers, FIDIC, 2003-2005, and was ex-officio member of FIDIC Contracts Committee. He continues to serve FIDIC as a Past President, and is a member and serves on the Region 3 Board of the Dispute Resolution Board Foundation, DRBF.
