Leading Australian mining and construction firm BGC Contracting Pty Ltd has continued its expansion into NSW by winning a contract to deliver the main civil construction work for a section of the $4.36 billion Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade in northern NSW.

The contract, awarded by Roads and Maritime Services, a NSW government agency, is for work on a 13 kilometre section of the highway between Tyndale and Maclean. It is part of a 155 kilometre highway upgrade jointly funded by the Australian and NSW and governments.

BGC Contracting will provide bulk earthwork, some road and pavement construction as well as bridgework and finishing work, in addition to meeting environmental controls, community engagement and full quality assurance requirements, of the contract.

BGC Contracting CEO Greg Heylen said his team would be working closely with other contractors, Roads and Maritime and its delivery partner Pacific Complete to build this section of the highway.

“The contract award is further encouragement for the company’s heightened strategic focus on public infrastructure projects and other opportunities in resources on the east coast, particularly in NSW and Queensland,” Mr Heylen said.

“Although there have been encouraging signs in the commodities sector, particularly coal, the downturn required us to refine our growth strategy by diversifying revenue streams through a broader geographic and commodities mix.

“In 2016, as a part of our diversification strategy, we established new offices in both Sydney and Brisbane to extend our services to clients across the east coast of Australia. We believe NSW offers significant potential in public infrastructure.

\“We are also currently working on another Roads and Maritime public infrastructure contract for a major upgrade to a section of Princes Highway, Burrill Lake about 230 kilometres south of Sydney.

“In both cases, BGC Contracting’s competitive pricing and ability to deliver on time were recognised in awarding the contracts.”

BGC Contracting is expected to start work on site next month, weather permitting
