Arup: As Australia‘s largest container
and general cargo
port, the
Port of Melbourne is of great importance to
the
Victorian and national economy. Trade forecasts indicate that
container and general cargo throughput demand will grow substantially in
the next few decades. To meet these demands, Port of Melbourne
Corporation (PoMC) has taken steps to provide additional capacity
through numerous programs, including an A$1.6bn redevelopment of
Webb
Dock.
Arup is providing the PoMC with extensive maritime engineering
consulting services for the redevelopment, including re-engineering the
existing wharves at Webb Dock East, a new 900m wharf at Webb Dock West
and associated dredging and navigation works.
The project will reconfigure and redevelop Webb Dock East, returning it
to its original role as an international container handling facility.
This new terminal will be capable of handling the equivalent of at least
one million containers per annum. At Webb Dock West, a state of the art
automotive facility will be created with capacity to handle 600,000
vehicles annually.
Victorian Premier Denis Napthine and Minister for Ports David Hodgett
were present for the breaking of ground for the redevelopment in March
2013. The works at Webb Dock are scheduled for completion in January
2017.
