Wood & Grieve Engineers: Work is underway on updating Australian Standard AS5488-2013 for Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE). WGE’s Rob Sansbury is involved with Engineers Australia and Standards Australia in improving the approach to the management of underground utilities like gas, water and electricity.

The updated standard will address one of the key challenges on a construction site – when existing underground utilities are not documented accurately, or information on existing infrastructure is simply not available.

A committee of industry stakeholders is being formed and will meet for the first time in April. Supported by Consult Australia, Engineers Australia, Standards Australia and Dial Before You Dig, the committee aims to recognise SUE as a specialist area of engineering and develop a national standard for the management of underground utilities, beyond the content of the existing standard AS5488-2013.

A training module is being developed by Engineers Australia which will be delivered through Open Learning. WGE are contributing to the new module to help assist the design management of utilities by skilled subsurface utility engineers.
