Seymour Whyte Constructions achieved a milestone when its Narellan Road Upgrade team successfully installed a 52 m long, 66-tonne bridge girder to widen the Narellan Road bridge over the M31 Hume Motorway in Campbelltown, NSW.

It was the largest bridge girder ever installed by Seymour Whyte Constructions, requiring two mobile cranes—weighing 750 tonnes and 450 tonnes each—to perform the girder lift. The 750-tonne crane is the largest mobile crane in Australia, and was operating with a lifting radius of 40m.

Seymour Whyte Constructions Regional Manager – Southern Steve Lambert said, “Dual lifting a 52 m long beam over a major motorway in Sydney is a tremendous challenge.

“Over the past 12 months, our team has worked diligently through a number of scope and coordinated with various stakeholders to ensure safe and efficient delivery of this complex activity.”

Project Manager Scott Calleja said that this was the second and final girder of the bridge widening, which will create an additional third lane travelling eastbound on Narellan Rd over the M31 Hume Motorway.

“The first girder, spanning 21 m in length, was installed in February this year. The placement of this final girder allows the bridge deck widening works to commence, and gets the project one step closer to relieving some of the traffic congestion in the local area,” he said.

“Seymour Whyte worked closely with RMS to develop a solution to lift the girder without the need for cranes setting up on the M31 Hume Motorway, to minimise any impact on motorists. I am pleased to say all works were conducted safely and executed as planned. The entire project team did a fantastic job in preparing for and undertaking this event.”

The Australian and NSW governments are jointly funding the $114 million Narellan Road Upgrade between Camden Valley Way, Narellan and Blaxland Road, Campbelltown (contract value for Seymour Whyte Constructions $60 million).
