Seymour Whyte ramps up in Victoria with Chandler Highway win

Seymour Whyte Constructions was recently awarded the $56 million design and construct contract for the Chandler Highway Upgrade—the company’s third Victorian project win in six months.
Regional Manager – Southern Steve Lambert said Seymour Whyte Constructions was looking forward to delivering the high profile project with the innovative design and value-added options that the company had presented in its proposal.
“Seymour Whyte came up with a new bridge option that eliminates the need for two sets of piers,” he said.
“This option allows for significant urban enhancement through higher quality finishes and more open spaces for the community to enjoy.”
The existing 127-year-old Chandler Highway Bridge will be refurbished and converted to a shared user path for cyclists and pedestrians, while cyclists will also be able to cross the highway via a new underpass near Yarra Boulevard. General Sir John Monash was the supervising engineer when the existing bridge was built in 1891 for the then Outer Circle Railway line.
The project will also include:

widening the highway to six lanes, including building a new bridge over the Yarra River

removing two major bottlenecks between Heidelberg Road and Yarrabend Park

improving cycling and pedestrian paths for a more direct and safer route to nearby trails

upgrading the Heidelberg Road intersection and new traffic lights at Yarra Boulevard.
