Multiplex, a leading global contractor, has been appointed by Mercy Health in partnership with the Victorian Department of Health and Services to deliver the $66.5 million Stage 1C of Werribee Mercy Hospital. Construction commenced today, marking the second of six stages of construction works to be carried out on the site located on the corner of Princes Highway and Hoppers Lane.

Designed by Architectus, the project involves replacing some components of the Stage 1A façade and adding a four level extension comprising six operating theatres, 64 bed in-patient unit including eight critical care beds and a new central sterile supply department.

This stage will also include a new stand-alone multi-level car park, extension and refurbishment works to improve the existing loading dock and kitchen and realignment and expansion of the hospital road access system, including new fire truck access.

“We are delighted to be a part of a project that will provide greater healthcare facilities and services for Victoria,” said Graham Cottam, Regional Managing Director at Multiplex.

“Our team has developed a strong reputation for its expertise in delivering successful projects in the health sector and stand well placed to overcome the challenges associated with carrying out construction works in a live hospital campus environment,” he said.

Some challenges facing construction include the operating hospital, in particular extending the existing operating lift and stair shafts, the loading dock and the kitchen whilst these sections remain active to service the hospital. There are also tight access and loading areas to the work site.

Construction will see 15 metre high steel encased columns implemented to support the expanded floor plates on the new levels above the existing hospital, as well as tensile steel balustrades to the building terraces.

Multiplex has vast experience in the health sector, having completed Epworth Geelong Technical Hospital, the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown, the Clinical Services Building at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, South East Regional Hospital in Bega and Byron Central Hospital, with St George Hospital in Kogarah currently under construction.

Construction of Stage 1 of Werribee Mercy Hospital is expected to be completed by mid, 2018.
