The Case for Open BIM Standards
01 March 2017
Aconex: Building Information Modeling has brought the construction industry firmly into the digital realm.
The ability to create a 3D representation of a project that can be shared among all stakeholders – from engineers to owners to subcontractors – is driving fewer mistakes, lower costs, more informed decision-making, and faster project completion.
Little wonder then why BIM is becoming a requirement for large-scale construction and engineering projects across the globe.
Lack of BIM Standards
The problem? Many BIM implementations rely on proprietary file formats that are not accessible to all collaborators, forcing people to rely on PDFs, spreadsheets, and paper print-outs to identify and re-mediate problems – thus negating one of the greatest benefits of BIM.
There is, however, a simple nonproprietary solution that allows each stakeholder to continue using their existing tools: Open BIM, the vendor-neutral approach to BIM collaboration.
Open BIM and the BIM Collaboration Format (BCF)
Open BIM formats such as the BIM Collaboration Format (BCF), used for coordinating design issues, are already being used today. Watch the video below to find out how.
A Common Data Environment (CDE) for Managing BIM
Aconex provides a cloud-based common data environment for managing BIM data, information and processes on the world’s largest construction and engineering projects.
