$51 million contract to transform Scarborough

24 January 2017

Deputy Premier Liza Harvey and Planning Minister Donna Faragher today announced the appointment of civil works company Georgiou Group as head contractor for the transformation of Scarborough's beachfront.

"Georgiou Group have extensive experience in delivering big civil works projects, particularly in high traffic areas, and will continue the foreshore redevelopment of the new public realm at Scarborough Beach," Mrs Faragher said.

"This includes a new surf club facility, improved promenades and beach access, and a children's playground, skate park and other recreation facilities surrounding the new Sunset Hill.

"A number of accessible elements will also be incorporated into the playground and Scarborough will join the expanding Changing Places network, providing more opportunities for people with disability to visit and enjoy the beach."

Ms Harvey unveiled artist impressions of the new children's playground, which had been designed around a whale skeleton reflecting the Whadjuk/Noongar stories of spirits returning to land through the whales.

"Scarborough has transformed so much in recent years and visitors are flocking to the foreshore but these public facilities we are announcing today will really be the jewel in the crown," the Deputy Premier said.

"Early next year, Scarborough will once again play host to the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, bringing thousands of interstate and regional visitors to the area and providing a great opportunity to showcase the refreshed beachfront.

"The Liberal National Government is committed to help fulfil Scarborough's enormous potential as one of Australia's best beaches and to foster future investment and development in the area."

Works will require changes to beach access and parking throughout 2017, which will be planned in consultation with local businesses and residents.
