First Sydney Light Rail tracks laid
12 January 2017
NSW Government: The first track has been laid on
Sydney’s George St in front of Town Hall.
The first
light rail tracks in Sydney’s CBD have been laid on George St
between Park and Bathurst Streets. The block will become part of a
one-kilometre pedestrian boulevard when the project is complete.
Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said it was a
major milestone to achieve the first 80 metres of tracks in George
Street.
“Building this world-class public transport system down one of Sydney’s
oldest streets has not been without its challenges, but we’re getting on
with the job,” Mr Constance said.
More tracks on George St near Martin Place and the QVB will be set in
place in early 2017.
The new pedestrian strip on George Street will integrate with retailers
in the area with flush paving, streamlined light rail stops, open space,
street furniture and new trees.
