The Australian Constructors Association (ACA), which represents Australia’s major construction companies, today welcomed the decision by the Victorian Government to review its framework for the procurement of public construction projects.

Commenting on the review, ACA President, John Flecker, said that the ACA is totally supportive of the initiative as it has the potential to lead to better infrastructure being delivered at lower cost to the community as well as further supporting employment and economic benefits for the State.

“The Victorian Government, through Treasurer Tim Pallas, has signalled its intention to further engage with industry to develop more efficient and cost effective ways of developing and implementing public construction projects. This is a very significant commitment and one that will be embraced by both major contractors and the industry’s supply chain”, Mr Flecker said.

Mr Flecker went on to say that a new approach to the development and implementation of projects will enable industry to be involved at a much earlier point in the procurement timetable, and this will provide the opportunity for industry to more effectively input design, innovation and cost efficiencies into projects.

“The ACA has previously said that there are opportunities for government to work with industry to reduce the cost of construction of major projects by 20 percent. By undertaking the review and implementing essential changes, the Victorian Government will release funds for other important community infrastructure”, Mr Flecker said.

Mr Flecker concluded by saying that the ACA looks forward to working with the Victorian Government to assist it to complete the review.
