Cardno engineer Richard Kell receives prestigious career achievement award

Cardno engineer and former Chairman, Richard (Dick) Kell, was awarded the Peter Nicol Russell Memorial Medal at the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards in Brisbane last night.

The Medal recognizes career achievement in engineering and is the most prestigious award conferred by Engineers Australia.  It is presented annually to an Honorary Fellow of Engineers Australia who has made a notable contribution to the science and/or practice of engineering in Australia.  

Dick Kell is one of Australia’s most distinguished engineers.  His career commenced in 1960 and successfully progressed to culminate in his becoming Chairman of Cardno and then Executive Director after its listing in 2004.  He has appeared frequently in the Engineers Australia “Top 100” and was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1998 for services to Engineering, particularly Bridge Engineering and International Affairs.     

Dick is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering, and an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.  He is currently Chairman of the Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering at the University of Sydney and serves on the board of DRBF Australia.  His many achievements include being the recipient of the IEAust John Connell Medal for Structural Engineering in 2000, and an Australian Centenary Medal in 2003, and Past President 2003-05 of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers, FIDIC.

“Apart from delivering exemplary technical advice to our clients, and contributing widely to the profession, Dick continues to serve as an excellent mentor to our younger engineers and managers throughout the company.”  

Upon receiving the award, Dick Kell thanked Engineers Australia and commented, “I am very humbled to be the 91st recipient of this significant award and to be in the company of other recipients such as Sir John Monash, Dr Bradfield, and Sir John Holland.”
