The Fulton Hogan Seymour Whyte Joint Venture (FHSW JV) has been appointed to finalise the design and construct the Bruce Highway Upgrade – Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
The $929.3 million project will see construction of a six-lane divided highway and delivery of major upgrades to the Caloundra Road and Sunshine Motorway interchanges, in one of Queensland’s highest priority road projects.
The FHSW JV, comprising of Fulton Hogan and Seymour Whyte Group and designers Arup and Jacobs, will deliver the upgrade on behalf of the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.
The FHSW JV developed an innovative design solution that transforms the Caloundra Road interchange into a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), the first to be built in Australia. The DDI is a unique design for reducing traffic congestion and improving safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. It also uses a smaller footprint than traditional interchange designs.
The FHSW JV brings together companies closely aligned in cultural, corporate and safety values to form a team that is highly experienced in delivering major and complex civil infrastructure design and construction projects in Queensland.
The appointment of FHSW JV represents a positive step forward for the Queensland construction industry.
The FHSW JV is pleased to partner with the Department of Transport and Main Roads and looks forward to working closely with the community to deliver this important upgrade.
Detailed design and preliminary construction are scheduled to commence in late 2016, with major construction expected to start in mid-2017. The project is scheduled for completion in 2020, weather permitting.
About the project
The Bruce Highway Upgrade – Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway project
involves an upgrade of the Bruce Highway between Caloundra Road and the
Sunshine Motorway to six lanes, including major upgrades to both
interchanges and the delivery of a service road for local traffic on the
western side of the highway between Steve Irwin Way and Tanawha Tourist
Drive.
The Bruce Highway is a road of
national significance for both passenger and freight travel in
Australia. The upgrade is among Queensland’s highest priority road
projects. The upgrade is needed to deliver critical safety benefits to
motorists, improve efficiency and reduce traffic congestion, and ensure
the highway can meet the strategic transport needs of the Sunshine Coast
region well into the future.
