The contract for the $32 million redevelopment of the Katanning Health Service has been awarded to Cockram Construction Ltd, Health Minister John Day and Regional Development Minister Terry Redman announced today.
Mr Day said the upgrades to the Katanning Health Service would include new emergency and medical imaging departments, an outpatient care facility, refurbished surgical services and sterilising facilities, laundry and a new morgue.
"Construction is due to start in late August and will support about 700 jobs over the course of the build, which will take around two years to complete," he said.
"The community will still have access to quality healthcare during construction, with the existing Katanning Health Service remaining operational."
The Katanning redevelopment is part of the Liberal National Government's Southern Inland Health Initiative's (SIHI) program to improve hospital infrastructure in 37 towns across the Wheatbelt, Great Southern, Mid-West and South-West regions.
The capital works program is one component of the $500 million SIHI program, made possible by the State Government's Royalties for Regions program.
Mr Redman said the Royalties for Regions investment would provide significant improvement to primary health care services through the redevelopment of district hospitals in southern areas.
"Improvements to infrastructure and service delivery - such as the new Katanning Health Service - will enable a greater number of patients to be treated regionally, reducing the need for travel away from family to other larger facilities in the regions or to metropolitan sites," he said.
"Royalties for Regions investment in health infrastructure is fundamental to building vibrant regions with strong economies."
Peter Hunt Architect are providing architectural services as lead consultant.
