The experienced local and international infrastructure leader will take the reins of the Australia Hub's Northern Region.

Most recently the National General Manager of Leighton Contractors, overseeing that company’s work in Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea, Darren Weir has also performed senior operational roles on major projects including the Clem7 Tunnel, the Ipswich Motorway, 111 Eagle Street, the Wivenhoe Dam, the Inner Northern Busway, Goonyella to Abbot Point Rail Line and the PNG LNG Project.

Laing O'Rourke Managing Director Cathal O’Rourke said Darren joined the executive team this month with a clear mandate to continue the company's strong growth in its $3 billion Australia Hub, as well as drive the focus on engineering excellence and customer service, and promote new opportunities in his operating region of Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Darren said he was excited to return to the ranks of Australia’s largest privately-owned construction and engineering company. “I previously worked for Laing O’Rourke on a major urban renewal and mixed-use scheme in the UK around a decade ago, and I’ve always been impressed with the company’s commitment to challenge and change the industry, invest in its people, and in the value it places on engineering innovation. Laing O’Rourke has a strong history in Queensland, the NT and across Australia and an exciting vision for the national infrastructure agenda,” he said.

Laing O’Rourke’s Australian operations have grown from $800 million in revenue in 2007, to around $3 billion by 2013. Key Northern Region projects during this time include:

“Darren joins the business at a time where we are progressing a number of complex and exciting engineering projects – across sectors including rail, oil and gas, defence, mining, civil and commercial works,” Cathal O’Rourke said.

Current Northern Region Director Mike Robins will oversee a three month induction and handover for Darren, which will include time at the Laing O’Rourke Group Headquarters in London and detailed introductions to clients. Following the Region handover, Mike will continue to utilise his major project experience by providing full time oversight to several projects, particularly the company's Oil and Gas works in Queensland and the NT, before embarking on his next role within the organisation.
