As Australia’s largest transport project, WestConnex promises more for Greater Sydney than just a motorway.

With a capital value of approximately $11 billion, the mammoth project heralds the urban revitalisation of a 20km corridor between Parramatta and Sydney’s CBD.

When complete, it will bypass up to 52 sets of traffic lights and create vibrant places within Western Sydney, benefiting the residents of more than 25,000 new homes.

AECOM is already hard at work developing integrated transport and land use outcomes for WestConnex, having been named late last year by UrbanGrowth New South Wales as the project’s Transport Planning and Land Use Technical Advisor, with contracts valued at $1.5M.

Now, the professional technical consultancy is expanding its involvement.

With partner GHD, AECOM has been appointed to carry out the environmental assessment and provide design development and communications services for the WestConnex M4 East project, which when complete will provide welcome relief from congestion on the M4 and Parramatta Road, enabling improved and more reliable travel times for commuters and businesses.

The $1.5 million contract reflects AECOM and GHD’s experience in the assessment of major urban road tunnel projects and on other major infrastructure projects including Melbourne’s East-West Link, the North-West Rail Link and the current assessment of the M1-M2 Link in Sydney.

AECOM Chief Executive, Australia New Zealand, Michael Batchelor, said WestConnex is an iconic project in Sydney’s development.

“This urban revitalisation will enhance Western Sydney as Australia’s third largest economy,” he said.

“The project will reduce motorists’ travel time, resulting in increased productivity and more free time for travellers.

“WestConnex will assist in making Sydney a more liveable city by reconnecting communities, enhancing centres and significantly improving the urban domain along Parramatta Road.

“The prospect of an enhanced local environment is a great win for our community, and AECOM is delighted to be partnering with WestConnex Delivery Authority to continue building a resilient Sydney.”
